Going on a book tour today is a far cry from what it was ten years ago. After a Mother’s Day Moment at my local bookstore in Chatham, The Yellow Umbrella, where we sipped mimosa’s and celebrated womanhood, I was off on what is best billed as a “virtual tour.”
My publisher Hyperion joined forces with Borders Books and More Magazine. The launch of The Second Journey happened at the downtown Borders in the Financial District of Boston. A studio was created in this beautiful flagship store and Mel Robbins, the personal coach and commentator for Border’s Advice for Living and I had a wonderful conversation about my metamorphosis from the time of awakening until now. We were joined by a panel of women, all of whom are in varying stages of development, and then I entertained questions from the audience. Two million Borders Advantage card holders are able to view the video and
order my book as well as others chosen for Borders shortlist on line. Without traveling to a hundred cities I was able to talk to readers one- on- one via the internet. Amazing.
That appearance was followed by others at the Border’s stores in Birmingham, Michigan, Atlanta, Georgia, and Phoenix, Arizona.

Since I was more than halfway across the country I then spoke at a Womansage Luncheon in Annaheim—don’t you love the concept…woman’s age or woman as sage? There were 250 women in the audience. Talk about powerful energy! It was pulsating!
Phase One ended in Lake Forest, Illinois where I spoke at a luncheon sponsored by Ragdale, an artist’s retreat on the prairie of Illinois.
The best part of every stop was meeting old friends who have retreated with me in the past and of course chatting with new seekers, women of every age who are destined for their second journey.

Returning home I spoke at a charity event called A Day of Women’s Words, Wit, and Wisdom, the proceeds of which go to helping women in transition. Also speaking were Ann Hood, three screen writers, and honoree was Donna Shalala. With a theme about “Sharing Our Stories,” inspiration abounded.

And finally, I just returned from a charity workshop on a farm in Maine. Eighty women gathered under a tent in the middle of a field to plot their journeys—billed as Everywoman’s Odyssey as we pondered, shared, and talked our way through the day we took full advantage of the pastoral beauty and ended our day with a circle in the hayloft of an ancient barn. Putting wild women in nature always casts a spell which sends us to the deepest recesses of our souls.

Now, I look forward to kicking back and welcoming a Cape Cod summer. Hoping that the abandon of the season brings out the child in you.
Unfinished,
Joan
